Almost all of the watches that I see over on Tokyoflash are so confusing I don’t think I would ever be able to tell time on them without an instruction manual and even then it would be a challenge. A new watch concept is on the site now that is pretty cool and I can actually use it. The watch has a rectangular face and instead of numbers or arcane symbols, it just uses words.

The numbers are spelled out and run together all down the watch face. The grey words illuminate blue when the time is active and there is a symbol on the bottom for AM or PM that lights to show if its day or night.
The watch is easy to read and the image below would be 6:40 PM. The thing is a bit large and bulky, but so are many of the watches the company offers. Perhaps the coolest thing about this watch is that it was designed by a 14-year-old.

There are only a few days to go until Nokia World 2010, but over at the company’s blog they’re already getting in on the crystal ball gazing fun with their Nokia U concept. The product of a “Design by Community” effort, it seemingly demonstrates that when you ask Nokia fans for their ideal device they throw in every high-end specification of recent months in a chassis that looks like a slimmed down N8.

According to the group consensus, the Nokia U would have a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, WiFi b/g/n, USB 3.0 and HDMI connectivity, all in a waifish 60 x 110 x 6-10mm monoblock form-factor crafted from soft-touch aluminum. They also want an 8-megapixel camera with both Xenon and LED flash options, a 4x optical zoom and HD video recording: oh, and they’d like to be able to upgrade the image sensor at a later date too.
Unsurprisingly Nokia has no plans to actually produce the Nokia U, which is likely to be a relief to the company’s engineers since there’s no way you could actually fit all of that tech into such a slim body. If you can take away anything from the exercise, it’s that the Nokia faithful are calling out for a big-screen, high-resolution device to take on the EVO 4Gs, DROID Xs and Galaxy S’ of this world.

Turnstiles may be one of those things that, if you ever find yourself thinking about it, may seem like a thing of the past. But they’re still out there, doing their thing in train stations and what not all over the globe. But, let’s face it — it’s been a long while since they’ve seen any kind of upgrade. So, if they were to get an upgrade, why not one that utilizes the energy that gets produced every day by people passing through them?

Thanks to the VIVA Design Team out of Guangdong University of Technology in China, we can say that some day that may just happen. Their Green Pass Turnstile is designed to harness the energy which is inherently produced by people passing through the turnstile. And, as you might imagine, the power that’s created from those people pass in and out of the turnstile would be used to power the turnstile itself. So, the system that reads your card would be powered by your body. Pretty creative, eh?
There’s no word on when or if this concept design will ever see the light of day, but we’ve got to admit: it’s a good idea. Putting a renewable energy source behind even the smallest of things can make the biggest of differences, so we’d be pretty excited to see these green turnstiles pop up all over the world.
